12 Weeks!

We went for our 12-week doctor's visit. The doctor wasn't going to do an ultrasound; she just wanted to hear the baby's heartbeat with a doppler. She couldn't find it (and that made for a nerve-racking few minutes as you can imagine) so we went for an ultrasound (much more fun anyway). This is what we saw:
You can see that the baby is kicked back "chillaxin" with it's leg up!! How sweet....oh but wait...
Then it moved around and wouldn't stay still for a while and then we got this shot:
SCARY BABY! It looks like an alien and it's waving at us!!! We absolutely cracked up ;)
She said that the baby looks great and we are still measuring a few days ahead of schedule!

Telling the World

The experts say (I'm sure it was unsolicited advice) that you shouldn't begin to tell people that you're pregnant until at least 12 weeks because of the high rate of miscarriage in the first trimester (20%).  Instead of following this sage advice, my husband and decided to tell our entire family the moment that the stick turned positive.  Yep, couldn't keep it a secret for 5 minutes!

Granted it was Christmas and therefore the one time of year that our family is present in it's entirety (and then some....long story from this Christmas) so we just couldn't possibly miss the opportunity to win Christmas (classically the person who gives the best present...just for the record, I will have the W until someone else reproduces in the Woodruff family)!  So we spilled the beans...in a big way.

Since then I have had trickles of emails (some from people I haven't talked to in a decade or more) telling me that I'm about to get fat or something less shocking but that serves the point to tell me that they have found me out.

The funniest, however, are the ones that are purely accidental.  Like a friend of ours whom we had to tell so he could take up the slack for me at work who told another resident that the only reason I was complaining about the food at lunch that day was that I was pregnant (he and I both turned beet red and thus had no shot at playing that comment off!) or when I accidentally outed myself to one of my greatest friends because I signed her blog which then sent a link to this!  Oops...

The truth is that we are so excited about this new development and it truly stinks that you're not supposed to share it with the people you love for 3 MONTHS?!?!  Ridiculous...I say live in the moment and let the good Lord worry about the rest!

Nausea

I consider myself incredibly lucky.  My genetics/luck/whatever have dictated that so far I have had no morning sickness, at least not the wretching kind.  But what I have experienced in the last few days have made me infinitely more sympathetic toward my sweet friends that did have issues with morning sickness.  I now have these sets of several minutes where I have overwhelming nausea and it usually takes me the rest of the afternoon to get over this!  It happens when I get hungry, full, thirsty, hot, and anytime I am in the car but not driving....I am quickly learning to avoid all of these aforementioned situations ;)

The food aversions are also something I'm not used to. If you have been around me or my family at meal time, you know that we aren't known to be picky eaters so this is new for me.  Lately if I eat something and then have to smell it after that, the smell nearly sends me into one of my episodes!

But otherwise, we are doing fabulously!  The first doctor's appointment went very well.  The baby measured 3 days ahead of schedule and, thankfully, there was only one baby!  I was very nervous about Joey's family history of twins!!

More to come!
