Brian Regan

There is a comedian that Joey and I have on our iPod (thanks to Meredith) that has a skit about asking someone "When's the baby due?"  The girl's response is, "What baby?"  So he says never, ever, ever, ever, ever....ever GUESS at that!
I pretty much share this philosophy.  We went to a recruiting dinner for our hospital and one of the medical students who came was approximately 10.5 months pregnant.  As a doctor, I don't know what else in the world could have possibly made her belly that big EXCEPT pregnancy.  But alas, I absolutely refused to say ANYTHING about her being with child until she stated so herself.  I just NEVER want to be in that little guessing game.

Well, evidently not all people feel the same way.  I have had DOZENS of complete strangers ask me when the baby is due.  Does it offend me?  No.  Does it make me wonder how many people they would ask this to before someone says, "What baby?" Yes.

The way I am choosing to think about it is this:  I must look so thin everywhere else on my body that my belly being big looks so out of place that I must be pregnant!  And if you disagree just don't tell me ;)

It's Official...Sort of

Well, I guess since I put his name in his baby book already, then it's pretty official (without the trivial legal document).  His name is (most likely) going to be:
Addison "Hayes" Eason

Addison is my dad's middle name and we just really like the name Hayes.  We have been saying that we were going to continue to talk about what names we like even though that has been our favorite since we found out we were pregnant months ago.  But, we never talked about any other names that trump this one!

Save the Date(s)!

My sweet aunts on both sides of my family have offered to have baby showers for me!  We are having one in Tuscaloosa on June 6th and one in Montgomery on June 7th.  Please save the dates because I would love to see everyone before the big move!
Some of you will get invitations to both because you don't live in either city and I didn't know which one you might be able to come to.
I can't wait!

Preemptive Homesickness

I had a mini breakdown yesterday on the drive home from Mom and Dad's house.  I realized that I have very few times (and maybe just two times) that I will be at Mom and Dad's before we move to Richmond.  And then who knows when I'll be able to come home?!
It was exacerbated by the fact that Jack is going to Macon for the summer and may not be able to come home when I am home with Beth in a couple of weeks.  So when will I see him next?!

So I came home and cried to Joey who gave me a little pep talk.  He reminded me that we will start work soon after we get up there and then it will be work just like it is here.  And then the baby will come and we will have visitors.....I repeat:  WE WILL HAVE VISITORS!!!!

Then my sweet sister must have felt my hour of need all the way from Texas because she called soon after.  And, of course, she understands this feeling!  She had some good, reassuring things to tell me and I do feel better.

I just love being this close to family and friends!  I am going to miss everyone so much!

Baby Bedding

I had the weekend off and Mom was willing to do some shopping with me.  So we went on a search for fabric so we could make the crib bedding.  Mom thought it would be a good idea to get some inspiration from Pottery Barn Kids....Long story short, we never made it to the fabric store because we LOVED what we found!  There was a bedding set that has this stripe on it:

And it also has airplanes on it!
So we got these cute airplane finials for the curtains:
I think it is so perfect!  Thanks, Mom!

Baby Shower

Two friends from work, Erin and Jessica, organized a girls' night/baby shower for me tonight.  We had so much fun!  It was so great just to get to hang out with all the girls that I've met this year.  I can't believe that we haven't even known each other for a year!
We went to Cocina (one of my favorites in Birmingham) and they even got a Zoe's chocolate cake because they know it's my favorite!  I got some of the CUTEST baby things including everything we'll need to bathe the little man, a baby monitor, pj's, blankets (sooo soft!), and a pair of scrubs!!!
Me, Jessica, and Erin
Allie and Alicia
Ashley, Michelle, and I
Jessica Starr, Anne-Laura, and Lindsey
It was so sweet of Erin and Jessica to put it together.  The greatest part was just getting to visit with everyone.  I will definitely miss seeing these faces in med ed next year!!

Glucose Test Follow-Up

I passed my glucose tolerance test which means that I don't have gestational diabetes!  Woo hoo!

Way to go, Jack!

I just wanted everyone to know that I am so happy for Jack!  Not only is he a rock star on the baseball field and has gotten accepted to an elite summer league in Georgia this summer, but he also made 3 A's and 2 B's this semester!  Sorry for sharing your business...I'm just excited for you.

Does it really have to be this hard?

Unfortunately when we move to Richmond my OB will not, in fact, come with me.  This means that I have to find a new one....when I am 32 weeks pregnant no less.  So I did the responsible, logical thing and asked my new program coordinator for recommendations.  No sweat, she sent me two.
I called the first about a week ago and had the pleasure of talking to a member of the front desk staff that obviously thought she was more educated than me.  She took my information and then read on her instructions that "all first time OB patients must see a Nurse Practitioner and on future visits can see a doctor."  I understand that she was following protocol but what she didn't understand was that I didn't care.  I appreciate and respect the privilege of nurses to help with OB care, but I will be 32 weeks pregnant and would at least like to meet the doctor that will deliver me ONCE before the actual delivery.  So she got snappy with me....unnecessarily.

So I got off the phone with Precious (I'm sure her name was something like this....at least it would have been had she lived in Alabama and not Virginia) and called my OB who BY THE WAY agreed with me.  She called and spoke with a different staffer who said, "Oh, she's already pregnant?  Well she needs to see a doctor!"  Novel idea.

Fast forward one week.  I finally have an appointment with a doctor for right before we start work.  That way Joey can meet the doctor too.  Does it really have to be this hard?

It's ok with me.....

1) To wish people would just send you a text message in lieu of a phone conversation....especially after you get off the phone and you know why they called.
2) To not want to have a conversation about the Alabama-Auburn rivalry on a daily basis OR to be attacked when you haven't said a single word.

3) To get fed up with your magazine collection and clear the board by canceling all subscriptions.

4) To want to stay in college a little longer than most people do so you can do all you want to do and be prepared for the real world.

5) To request what gift you really want from people very close to you...Thanks Beth!

I'm going to try the list thing....

A few things that make me smile these days:
1) Reading all the many blogs that have erupted in our family
2) Getting to wear pants with elastic in the waistband and it being socially acceptable
3) The belly band that Beth gave me because I can wear my pants completely unbuttoned and unzipped and it's socially acceptable!
4) My awesome family....most of them are in fact awesome even individually
5) Every time Merve kicks me, even when it's straight to the bladder!!  I. love. it.

Oh yeah and getting to freak Betsy out by just being pregnant....that's hilarious to me!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

I want to wish all of the mothers in my life a wonderful and happy Mother's Day!  That includes my mom, of course.  But also my grandmothers, all my wonderful aunts, and my friends who are fairly new to the Mother's Day scene!

I love you all!

Playing Cards with Grandmother

I can tell you that my (often annoying) competitive nature comes from playing sports, or from having a sister close to my age, or just a charming part of my overall OCD ways.  But I would be lying/wrong.  I truly believe that the true art of competition started with playing card games with Grandmother Woodruff.
Most of the grandchildren on the Woodruff side have their own stories of their first card games which often involve Grandmother baby-ing us through the rules in the first one or two games until we got the hang of it.  But that is where she stops being nice and starts getting real (anyone catch which TV show that's from?!?).

There we were, five or six years-old, thinking this might be a friendly activity with our precious and nurturing Grandmother.  Wow, were we wrong!  And we all had to find out the hard way...

Grandmother was not about to lie down without a fight and she was surely not going to "let us win" no matter how much she loved us.  This is how she got her nickname (Thelma) and where we get many life lessons such as:
1) A card laid is a card played
2) No table talk.....I'm not sure how this translates to a life lesson, but it's absolutely necessary to remember in our games!
2) Think before you play/plan ahead
3) Be aware of the things happening around you
4) If you commit to something, you have to see it through until the end, and for goodness sake:
5) Pay attention and stay in the game!

But one thing I didn't learn when playing cards was, "It's not whether you win or lose," it's how much fun you have playing the game....nope.  I don't feel that at all!  I HATE losing.  And this really becomes annoying to Joey, because unfortunately I have married someone who beats me (fair and square) in almost everything we play....it's just AWFUL I tell you.

One of the things that Joey and I have talked about regarding Merve is that we want him to know the rules and strategies that you learn by playing games the correct way.  We don't want to teach him that if you miss a shot in pool, you get more until you hit one in.  I don't want him to think that he should win no matter what and especially not that the good things in life will be handed to him.  So Grandmother will have to retract her Thelma-claws when he gets ready to learn how to play cards, but I'm going to let her teach him the same way she taught all of us!

Doctor's Visit

I went for my 24 week visit today.  She listened to his heartbeat which was good and measured my belly which is getting big!  I gained 7 pounds in the last 4 weeks which I can probably blame on the dessert habit that I've picked up.
She wasn't concerned about the Zyrtec thing and said that she has had lots of other patients who have taken it during pregnancy and there are no complications associated with it that she knows of.  But she thought it was a good idea that I cut down on how much I'm taking.

I also had my glucose tolerance test today and they drew my blood so I'll know if my dessert habit has really gotten out of control or not!  Hopefully it will come back just fine to save me the pain and misery of the 3-hour glucose test!

MMMM...Tomato Sandwich

I went to Walmart today (I was trying to be crafty and go at an extremely off time...i.e. Sunday morning), and I treated myself with two things:  a watermelon and bag of tomatoes.
The first order of business was to cut into the watermelon.  I have never attempted it, but I think I could eat myself to death with watermelon because I. love. it. so. much!  So you would think that since I have lunch plans, I could probably stop at that one snack at 10am.  Nope.

The tomatoes were crying out to me along with the loaf of bread in the fridge.  They were longing to be put together in the ultimate southern summer sandwich.  So I went for it, and it was good...I'm talking really good.  A little mayo and some of Dad's "dirt" spice and I was good to go.  I am actually craving another one already!  Yummy, yummy

Yeah! Maternity Clothes

This is a follow up to the post "Ugh...Maternity Clothes":
We went to Florala last weekend and spent some much needed time with Joey's parents...we don't get to see them often enough!  While we were there we got to catch up on sleep, relaxation, and SHOPPING!  Well, at least the online kind.  Mrs. Ann wanted me to find some maternity clothes to wear and after researching the physical shopping we could do in the area it became evident that we should just stay in our pajamas and do it the high-tech way.

So I found a good bit of stuff that looks good online, but who really knows what it's going to look like when I get it here and THEN have to try it on (yes, as Clinton and Stacy say...you have to try on a lot of pieces to find what works for you).  But we took a leap of faith and hit Send.  And it worked...for the most part!

Out of more than ten pieces that we ordered I am sending ONE pair of jeans back!  Can you believe it?!  I got pants I can wear to work, jeans, dresses, and shirts and they almost all worked.  This is nothing short of amazing in my eyes!  Thank you Mrs. Ann and Emlyn for the shopping help!
