A random topic I know but I have not been blogging in a while and I thought I needed to contribute something to keep everyone interested (or make sure that you never check again!).
- The peace that comes with celebrating someone's life when it ends rather than focusing on the loss - my great uncle died in the last couple of weeks and I have never seen a more united and loving bunch than the one he left here on earth. I attribute this to his strong Christian faith and that his family knows that they will see each other again in the presence of the Lord!
- Being able to say, "I have to praise the Lord in the bad times just as much as in the good." Same great uncle from the first point. He had a stroke some years ago during a heart surgery that I'm sure he wasn't thrilled about in the first place. It reminds me that God tells us that our life is not guaranteed to be easy - but we should praise Him anyway! And know that He has a plan and path in mind and that sometimes we have to be molded in fire rather than cool-swimming-pool-water-on-a-hot-day easy.
- Total 180: people who can blog EVERYDAY! I am subscribed to many different blogs now that I am addicted to Google Reader and these people have noteworthy thoughts or tips or what-have-you every.day. I don't know that I have them every week (I'm sure I do, just too tired to act on them :))
- How much my son picks up every day. He is now using phrases instead of just one word at a time. He watches Shrek a.lot. and will say "Run away!!" when the people run from Shrek etc. Too cute and too funny! He also helps me make waffles on Saturday mornings (a ritual he and I have adopted because we both love waffles and we are the team up on Sat mornings esp when Joey is on a night shift) - and he will give me updates on the "ready" light - RED means still heating up/not ready, and GREEN means ready. He will tell me what color it is and get excited when it turns green because it's WAFFLE time! He also wakes up on Saturday mornings (and some weekday mornings when he gets ahead of himself) saying "Faffles?" - that's not a type-o, it's phonetically how he says it.
- People who go to the grocery store every time they cook - I try to only go once a week and once every two weeks if it's feasible. I dislike going but will once weekly to get our rations of fresh fruits and vegetables to augment what I have already bought in the meal-plan.
- Teachers - plain and simple. I am now in a role of being a senior resident to juniors and helping teach them a foreign language - EMG. It's our nerve and muscle test that utilizes electrical stimulation over nerves and records them in a computer program. Well, it's a steep learning curve that I only went through last November (so I clearly remember NOT being able to do it) and it still stresses me out that my junior doesn't know what to do! My mother, many of my aunts, my mother-in-law, my grandmother and so-on are great examples of people in my lives who are teachers but somehow that gene skipped me. Thankfully it hit my husband so our kids will benefit from that! I actually asked one of my attendings this week how he was able to let me do so much with his patients when clearly he is better than I am - he didn't really have an answer other than he doesn't let every resident do as much as he lets me do (yeah, I'm just that good :P).
- People who can up and move to a foreign country. I am obsessed with House Hunters International and less about the vacation homes (which is fun to dream about) and more about the people who move to the Czech Republic and other places. I have a friend who just moved to Guam because she is an MD in the military....she's a braver person than I am! I have another who got married, had a baby, then relocated to Norway with her Norway-born new husband. Yeah, she's close to her husband's family and I'm sure that helps a little but her family is in ALABAMA (take a look at the map, it's not close). Our entire family stays a little on edge because we are all so spread out and we are all technically still in the south - just stretching from Richmond to Austin. I saw one HHI where the family was moving to Europe just so their kids would have a unique exposure to different countries and cultures....my kids will just have to be exposed in smaller doses. Thankfully my husband has the same itch to get back closer to family (largely in part, I'm sure, because I would be much happier closer to family!).
I'm sure there is so much more but these are the things I am thinking of this morning!

My Little FISH! Well....Timid Fish
We joined a gym this weekend and the top of the list of reasons (and maybe my only reason) was to get H into a pool! There is an infamous picture of my childhood (really baby-hood) where I can't even hold my head up yet and my mother is DUNKING me under water in a pool! Somebody call CPS....I feel scarred!!
Anyway, swimming has always been a big part of my life and I don't want Hayes to be scared of the water and we don't really have the time to put him in swim lessons (not to mention that I am perfectly qualified for that position!)...so we had to get him exposed to water!!
The university that we are affiliated with up here (VCU) built a new rec facility last year in a former industrial/warehouse space and it.is.nice. They have TWO pools in one of their two facilities and one is tailor made for introducing someone into the water!
Hayes was a little scared the first day but was eventually able to get down into the water to his chest/neck level (the sloped area starts at 0 feet 0 inches). And the second day he was able to get there immediately and by the end of the "session" he was holding on to me like a kick board and kicking his feet and SMILING! A huge improvement over the constant scared whining :)
We were not able to take pictures since Joey and I were both occupied but it was cute and fun! And I am ecstatic that there is not one more photo documentation of me in a bathing suit during this pregnancy :)

Ta-Da!

We went for the ultrasound today and we are expecting a little brother for Hayes!!
They did not give us digital images so I had to take pictures of the pictures....not ideal but you get the idea :)

The ultrasound tech and the doctor both said everything looks great! We counted limbs and they are all present :) He weighs approximately 11 ounces today...a lot of growing left to do!

We now have a well-upholstered dorm room!
Joey and I live in a 1948 house that the upstairs is a converted attic. So the shape of the room is NOT a rectangular prism and it's a little difficult to furnish....and it's the room that our guests see the least of, so we haven't been too worried about it!
Mom and I went shopping for curtain and euro sham fabric at CHRISTMAStime in order to dress our room a little bit (which I lovingly refer to as a dorm room since our bed is on a metal frame and we have mismatch furniture...extremely mismatched). But, when Mom and I are together, we have much more fun things on our minds that sitting down for 10 hours to sew pillows and curtains. So this week, I got a craving to complete these projects (is it considered "nesting"?) and have spent about 10-12 hours on sewing. It has been so much fun! And so rewarding to be able to see what I have created (I liken it to Dr. Jekyl bringing his creations to life...[insert evil laugh here])!
Here's how things turned out:

I really had a lot of fun doing these projects. I learned a lot about sewing and the fact that I use my middle finger to guide things (which is why this finger was stuck with pins the most!). I know I am still light-years behind my mother, grandmother, and my friends who magic perfectly tailored outfits for their adorable kids out of thin air!

Two things to comment on about this next picture: 1) I made this from a scrap of fabric from the curtains [insert evil laugh here] AND embroidered it myself! 2) This was taken with my new camera and I was standing at the bottom of the bed. With the full size file, I can zoom in to the pillow so much that I can see the individual stitches!!!
Yes, those are FULLY LINED curtains :) Trying to create a cave-like atmosphere for my night-call husband.
